The Institute's dominating research themes all rotate around one fundamental concept embedded within that of design theory: "The Science of the Artificial". The aims of institutional and technological innovation of IMT’s research are rooted within this idea. Elements of Design theory are what make up the connective tissues of the Institute, forming a concrete base for the formation of diverse types of professionals: economists, social scientists, experts in the management of cultural heritage, computer scientists, engineers and physicists. The development of research is supplemented with a shared platform known as IMTLAB, used in conjunction with thematic Research Units for the development of highly mission-oriented research projects. Two multi-disciplinary Research Areas (Computer Science and Applications and Economics and Institutional Change) are the reference for the formal affiliation of IMT's Faculty.
